As the world is witnessing the deadly coronavirus - COVID-19 pandemic and struggling to put an end to it, the rate of its spread continue to grow rapidly and simultaneously in various parts of the world. The World Health Organisation, W.H.O recent update on global cases of the COVID-19 pandemic indicates that it is near 175,000 cases and growing.
In this regard, Sweden is no exception. The first case of the COVID-19 in Sweden was confirmed on January 31, 2020, when a woman returning from Wuhan was tested positive. This number has since increased significantly to 992 cases as of March 16, 2020, with fewer fatalities.
Due to such increased and proximity, the leadership of the Liberian Swedish Association, LSA has deemed it necessary to canceled two of its upcoming events (LSA Norrland Branch 1st Anniversary/Inauguration Event and LSA Kids Easter Day Event), which were scheduled to take place in April 2020.
According to the leadership, this action is to protect its members and supporters - to help avoid the possible spread of the COVID-19 in the LSA community. The leadership is calling on all members and supporters to kindly take the COVID-19 seriously and adhere to preventive measures that are recommended by renowned health authorities.
ABOUT THE COVID-19:
The outbreak of the new coronavirus emerged since December 2019 in China. According to Global health institutions and practitioners, the COVID-19 is a disease that is caused by a new virus that has not been previously identified in humans.
Most people who are infected by the COVID-19 get mild respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
The virus is transmitted through contact with an infected person or via respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. There is a higher risk of infection if a person have been in an area where the virus is spreading, or if a person have been in close contact with a person infected with COVID-19.
Most health institutions points out that standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose with flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing - handshakes, and avoid large social gatherings.
